It gives your home the back garden it deserves and takes away maintenance stress. Artificial turf does not require upkeep, it doesn’t need fertilizing, watering, or mowing. Also other landscaping resources complement it greatly, including flowers of all colors, bushes and trees. How to prepare garden artificial grass

  • Remove old grass from the garden

Before you install the artificial grass on your lawn, if you currently have natural grass in your garden it’s vital to remove it. You may be able to use a spade to remove the old grass if your back garden is not too big. However, using a spade may be difficult if your garden is bigger. In that situation you may need to use a turf cutter. It is advisable to dig the soil out to about 40mm – 50mm to account for the height of your new artificial lawn.

  • Clear up

It is important to remove any long shards of real grass left behind and clear any overgrown bushes to make sure the space where you want your new artificial lawn installed is neat and ready. This makes things easier for the artificial turf installers. Other things like rocks, toys etc, should also be cleared away before installation takes place and flower and plant pots should be appropriately stored away.

  • Edging and base layer

After clearing up the space where your artificial turf is to be fitted, the next step is to add your first base layer and insert your timber edging. The timber edging is very necessary once your artificial turf has been laid. This is in order to secure it. We recommend 19mm x 38mm (2” x 1”) for standard perimeter edged and for flower bed edged, we recommend 19mm x 97mm (4” x 1”). You’ll need to add the type 1 crushed limestone base once the timber edging is completed as this helps to form a firm base and also helps with drainage.

  • Lay your sharp sand

Once you have removed your old turf, cleared the area, added a timber edge and laid your first base, then laying out a batch of sharp sand is the next step. The sharp sand acts effectively as the base for your artificial turf. Use a builder’s plank, wacker plate or heavy hammer to ensure that the sharp sand is levelled. This makes it smooth and compacted. The rolls of artificial turf will lay better when the sharp is smother, hence the smoother the better.

  • Add a protective layer

It is important to ensure that the area where your new artificial turf is to be laid is protected against any weeds and other plants that may grow up from underneath it before laying the new lawn. The best way to do this is to add a protective layer of the membrane to stop any wildflowers growing up through the new turf and damaging it.

  • Installation

After completing all of the above processes, you are now ready for the installation of your artificial lawn.

Artificial Grass Back Garden Ideas

Open Green Space

You can bring vibrant colour to your back garden all the while reducing or even eliminating the risk of muddy waters, patchy areas, and weeds by having an open green space of artificial grass. In addition, you spend less time weeding, mowing and maintaining your lawn when you replace it with artificial turf and instead spend more time enjoying and relaxing in your back garden. If you have a smaller or square shaped back garden, then the option of a classy and attractive open green space with artificial grass is most suitable for you.

You can use edging, paving slabs, and building in flower beds to easily transform an open green space beautifully.

Colours and Coordination

If you are interested in making your back garden colourful, you can leave space for flower beds or build them in the back garden and afterwards, you can fill up the flower beds with several colourful and beautiful flowers. In addition, ensure that you leave at least a metre between the edge of the artificial lawn and the end of the bed when you are using flower beds to create borders for your back garden. This helps to allow plants of different sizes to grow properly within the flower bed.

It is advisable to coordinate the flower beds or pots with the color of your slabs if you are adding them to paved areas. Grey, black and white coloured slabs work well with bold coloured flowers like orange, yellow and red while sandy coloured slabs look great with flowers having gentle pastel tones like light blue and soft pink. You should also coordinate your flower beds or pots to the various seasons. Use bright yellows and brilliant reds during the autumn season and soft colours like pink and white during the summer or spring.

Water and Fire

Another way to transform the overall look of your back garden immediately is by giving it a man-made feature. This feature also adds something incredibly special to your back garden. The man-made feature could be sophisticated like a large garden pond or even as simple as a small fire pit to gather around on cold evenings and nights. The presence of a pond creates a relaxing and tranquil environment while the presence of firepits creates an atmosphere for entertainment and also allows you to spend more time outdoors.

Similarly, even the smallest gardens can benefit from a stand-out feature or focal point. Small back gardens with artificial turf can also have eye-catching man-made features albeit smaller ones like freestanding waterfalls or small fountains to really give life to your  back garden.

Garden Structures

Gardens also serve as additional space for you to take advantage of and can be improved with residential structures for storage, as a guest room or just as somewhere to unwind during the summer months. Summer houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes or can be custom-built to your specifications.

Ideal for creating a shady area to escape the summer sun, garden structures can also be used for temporary accommodation or even as an added revenue stream if you choose to rent them out. In addition, summer houses are easy to accessorise with garden lights and soft furnishings to add a more homely and relaxing atmosphere.

Raised Areas

Adding different heights and experiences to your garden is an easy way to make it look more aesthetically pleasing. Terraced flower beds using stone and brick can be extremely effective while adding areas of decking brings a sophisticated atmosphere. Similarly, if you like the idea of flower beds but aren’t really the green-fingered type, why not opt for artificial grass border ideas to cut down on the maintenance work that traditional flower beds create? Decking and patios is also serve as a fantastic way to add areas for outdoor dining with the option to add a roof for shelter against the wetter weather

Things To Consider When Choosing The Best Artificial Grass For Your Back Garden

Regardless of the usage of your artificial grass, there are a few things you should consider when choosing the best. Here are a few tips to help you get the most suitable artificial grass for you:

How much usage will your lawn receive?

Some artificial lawns will be used by pets and the entire family frequently while others may only be used purely for ornamental and beautification or decorative purposes.

If your lawn will be rarely used, then choosing a dense pile of artificial grass or a hard wearing will not be necessary. However, if your lawn will be used frequently and will receive a lot of foot traffic, then it is advisable that you choose a grass manufactured with Nylon fibres as it is the most resilient and strongest artificial fibre used in manufacturing artificial grass.

It can withstand extremely heavy use and the fibres will recover from furniture placed in the garden and foot traffic to return to its natural look of an upright position.

How good is the backing?

It is very vital to look closely at the backing of the artificial turf when you are trying to choose one that is long lasting.

Most manufacturers of artificial grasses combine a primary backing typically consisting of a woven or non-woven membrane with a secondary backing consisting of latex.

The primary backing is where the fibres are stitched to and then a coating of latex is applied to form the secondary layer which is how everything is held together.

It’s very necessary to choose an artificial grass that has backing materials with high levels of latex present.

Inferior artificial grass tends to have low levels of latex and as a result of this, the primary and secondary layers become separated and it can also cause excessive fibre loss.

We advise that the backing you choose should have a minimum of 800grams of latex per square metre.

Do you have any dogs or pets?

An artificial grass that can withstand regular use and heavy foot traffic is the best option for owners of dogs and pets. Our professionals at Gecko Artificial Grass Manchester advise pets and dog owners to get a Nylon artificial grass for their lawns.

With this choice, the height of the pile is not necessarily relevant. However, if you do not want to get a nylon artificial grass but instead want a fibre material made of Polyethylene or Polypropylene, then it would be better to opt for an artificial grass with a shorter pile height of about 25mm.

Is your chosen artificial turf fire resistant?

Choosing a fire resistant artificial turf is also very vital. This gives you assurance in case of fire outbreaks. Although not all artificial turfs are fire resistant, most of them are. Knowing that your artificial turf will not help in spreading fire relieves you of a bit of your anxiety when there’s a fire outbreak.  This is why it is advisable to check with the manufacturer if the turf you chose is fire resistant.

Is your chosen artificial grass free from harmful substances?

It is important to always choose an artificial grass that has been independently tested and certified against harmful substances to ensure there aren’t any dangerous substances present in your chosen artificial turf. This is for your safety and that of your pets and family members.

You can also check this with your manufacturer.

How long is the manufacturer’s warranty?

The length of the manufacturer’s warranties can range from 3 years to 10 years. It’s very necessary to check what exactly is covered by your warranty, because some warranties do not have any worth. A good warranty should cover against excessive loss of yarn and colour fading as minimum throughout its duration.
